


Dr. Suzanne Goodney Lea
Dr. Lea is trained as a Sociologist-- specifically as a
Social Psychologist. She did her undergraduate
work in Sociology (honors) and History at the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. She
graduated from U-M in 1992. After graduating from
U-M, she spent two years teaching English as a
Second Language in Seoul, Republic of Korea
(South Korea). She returned to the US to do
graduate work in Sociology at Indiana University in
Bloomington, IN. She earned her M.A. and, later,
her Ph.D. from I.U. Her dissertation deconstructed
the idea that animal cruelty during childhood predicts
later violence towards other humans. She defended
the dissertation in March, 2005; it was published in
2007 by LFB Scholarly Press. Dr. Sue's research
interest is the etiology of violence as it relates to
identity processes. She is currently working on a
project exploring identity formation and violent
behavior in the case of college-aged shooters. Dr.
Lea has been interviewed by ABC World News
Tonight and by The Guardian Unlimited regarding
the Virginia Tech shooter. She has presented upon
her research in both the U.S. and the U.K. and has
authored several articles as well.
Dr. Lea has taught Sociology, Criminology, and
Criminal Justice courses at a range of institutions. In
1999-2000, she was a Preparing Future Faculty
Fellow at Indiana University-Purdue University,
Indianapolis. She taught for many years at Indiana
University in Bloomington, IN, while doing her
graduate studies. She later taught brief stints at
University of Michigan at Flint, Eastern Michigan
University, and University of Windsor in Windsor,
Ontario (Canada). From 2005-2007, she taught at
Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. In July,
2007, she moved to Trinity (Washington) University
in Washington, D.C. to direct the Criminal Justice
Program there. Dr. Lea is strongly committed to her
teaching endeavors and strives to develop
innovative pedagogical strategies-- with particular
effort to engage the first-generation student
population that is revolutionizing the academy. She
collaborates with the Interactivity Foundation as part
of these efforts.
Dr. Lea lives in Columbia, MD, with her husband,
Andrew, and their two dogs, Jack & Clyde. Dr. Sue
and Andy are in the process of adopting a child from
the foster care system of either D.C., Maryland, or
Virginia. They just bought a house in Columbia, MD.
